2024 Summer Training Program

This summer, 9470 is offering a free robotics training program to help increase interest for robotics in our local community and promote the team.

Programs

Our training will occur in two phases: L1 Beginner Training and L2 Advanced Training. Trainees are expected to complete L1 before moving on to L2.

L1 Beginner Training

Signups for L1 training are now closed! For inquiries about training on other weeks not scheduled, or information on advanced L2 training, please contact us at tychoyoung@gmail.com.

In an intensive, single week training camp, students will be guided to work with their peers to independently build, wire, program, and improve a full sized FRC robot. We intend to place learning at the forefront of our priorities, so groups will be significantly smaller than team size.

Students will also learn valuable teamwork and leadership skills as they work with their peers to complete a challenging yet rewarding task, while having fun all along the way!

Students in the program will receive:

  • intensive L1 Training in all FIRST robotics skills including mechanical assembly, electrical
  • coding and robot operations
  • an invitation to compete at Sunset Showdown
  • leadership training

L1 training will occur in two blocks:

  • week 1 – beginner – June 24-28 (Mon-Fri 10-5)
  • week 2 – beginner and intermediate – July 1-5 (Mon-Fri 10-5)
  • (BEGINNER CANCELLED) week 3 – beginner and intermediate – July 8-12 (Mon-Fri 10-5)
  • week 4 and beyond – intermediate & advanced – July 15-19

Additional beginner slots in later weeks may become available upon popular demand.

Students are expected to bring:
– packed lunch
– water bottle
– a positive learning mindset!

Students are expected to attend every day in order to maximize the pace of the class.

Location: South Fremont

L2 Advanced Training

After students complete a week of L1 training, there’s still more to do. After weeks one and two, students will be given the option of iterating and improving on the Kitbot they made, or working on an advanced swerve drive robot that will compete at Sunset Showdown. Students will learn about more than just the mechanical aspects of assembly by exploring their own design decisions and solving problems like an engineer.

Discord

Discord is our team’s primary method of communication. Please have your students use the invite link below to join the Discord server so they can get to know our team members and keep up to date with team events and communications. Parents are invited too! Please do not share this link with outsiders, as we aim to maintain the team Discord as a safe space for learning.

Sunset Showdown

Have you ever wanted to do robotics at sea? Sunset Showdown (July 19th-21st) is an off-season FIRST Robotics Competition tournament hosted by the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum and presented by FIRST California and Team 5924 – Golden Gate Robotics. 42 robots will be playing the 2024 FRC game on the flight deck of the USS Hornet aircraft carrier. The advanced training robot will compete in Sunset Showdown, and we invite you to be a part of it all! All students are invited to attend this incredible competition, where we’ll meet some of the best teams out there! Further details will be communicated at a later date.

Support Robotics Education

While there is no fee for attending our program, there is a suggested donation fee of $200-$500 for attendees that will go to purchasing parts and materials. If you are able to donate more, please consider contributing up to $1000 to support the costs of students who are less financially able.
